2. PR for 2002 FIRA Cup
2.1 Demonstration at the FIFA 2002 Final Draw
Demonstration of Middle League MiroSot (5-a-side MiroSot) was held
during the FIFA 2002 Final Draw event in Busan, Korea from November
26 to December 1, 2001, which was the first official event of the
2002 FIFA World Cup.
It was a very good opportunity to publicize FIRA Robot Soccer and
the 2002 FIRA Cup as hundreds of journalists attended, from around
the world.
2.2 Coverage by the BBC
A reporter from the BBC visited Prof. Jong-Hwan Kim in the RIT
(Robot Intelligence Technology) Lab, KAIST
to cover the FIRA activities and robot soccer demonstration games
before attending the FIFA 2002 Final Draw in Busan.
3. News about Game Categories
3.1 1st FIRA Workshop on Humanoid Robot Soccer (HuroSot)
1st FIRA Workshop on Humanoid Robot Soccer (HuroSot) took
place from January 23 to 24, 2002 at KAIST in Daejeon, Korea.
The Workshop participants had the opportunity to meet and
discuss relating to humanoid robot soccer in particular and other
complex robotic systems used for entertainment and education
in general.
Prof. Thomas Braunl and Jacky Baltes (Co-Chairs for HuroSot) and
invited speakers had a rule meeting for HuroSot games on Jan 24,
2002. The final version of the rules for HuroSot will be available
at the FIRAnet soon.

3.2 Upgraded Software System for SimuroSot
The Robot Soccer Simulation Game, SimuroSot, has been developed
to simulate the physical workings of Robot Soccer in an electronic
cyber-based environment. The participants build strategies and
compete with each other on computer screens without needing real
robots. SimuroSot 2002 will include two categories - 11:11 and
5:5 SimuroSot.
Strategies for the 5:5 SimuroSot program (in 3D) can be developed
in both C++ and Lingo, a script language for Macromedia Director.
The Lingo version is currently available and the Development Kit
can be downloaded from the FIRAnet. It contains an installation
program, an executive platform program, example strategies, and
a manual for beginners to learn how to program in Lingo. Another
version for C++ programmers will be ready on the FIRAnet soon.
A 2D simulation platform for 11:11 is for C++ programmers and
currently available at the FIRAnet.

May 2002, and are interested in getting more information on
5-a-side and 11-a-side SimuroSot programmings, please contact

3.3 Introduction of KheperaSot
KheperaSot is one of the categories in 2002 FIRA Robot World Cup
Korea. Please participate in this category. Registration Form is

The rules for KheperaSot games were finally decided to follow
Denish Soccer rules which is based on the linear camera turret
(K213) to have a viable tournament.

2002 FIRA European Cup will be held from April 18 to 21, 2002

Prof. Kyung-Hyun Choi (Cheju Nat'l Univ., Korea) formed
FIRA Asia Chapter to promote FIRA activities in Asian region.
One annual meeting will be held usually during the Asian Championship.
Also Tele-meeting will be organized and other business will be done
by e-mail.

Yujin Robotics Co., Ltd. recently developed a small wireless module,
SRF-418/433 (www.yujinrobot.com). Its frequency range is 418MHz
and 433MHz, with 10 channels.
To change the channels, simply send the channel data through
serial interface. If applied to Robot Soccer, you can play 5
games at the most in one setting.
