The 9th FIRA Robot World Cup 2004 Korea (October 27~31, 2004) was held at BEXCO, Busan, Korea. The event was well supported by the Korea Science Foundation (President Choi, Young-Hwan) and FIRA (President Kim, Jong-Hwan). It was also sponsored by various government organizations including MOST, MOICE and MOFAT.
96 teams from 21 countries participated in 8 different categories of the FIRA Robot World Cup 2004 Korea in the BEXCO Robot Soccer Stadium. The participating teams played the games and displayed their national flags.
Singapore won the MiroSot 11x11 and Austria won 5x5.
Not surprisingly, the brand new category, MiroSot 11 x 11, was the highlight of this year World Cup. Each team of 11 robots played games against 11 opponent robots on a large 4.4M x 2.8M playground. The SPARIC team from Singapore Polytechnic defeated AUSTRO from Austria; NewNEU from China and Korea, KINGGO team, and became the winner of the category. The SPARIC team introduced a well organized scheme of intelligent cooperation and amazingly fast transition between attacking and defending.
In spite of the AUSTRO team, loss in the final of MiroSot 11 x 11, AUSTRO team was the most notable team of the year. The AUSTRO team introduced a well developed state-of-the- art vision system and very specially designed robots that performed the most wonderful plays.
Korea descending, China, sudden ascending
The Korean teams, Sorty of KAIST, Puma of Pusan National University, Power Supply of YoungNam Univ. and Neo-Sensation of Kyungbuk National Univ., which have been the strongest teams in Korean so far, suffered in the MiroSot games this year. The KINGGO team of Korea, last year Champion of the MiroSot 5 x 5, this year failed to reach the semi-final. On the other hand, the Chinese teams showed much improved results this year. The HeiLong team of Harlbin Institute of Technology won two categories including the game of RoboSot which contains an embedded vision system and HuroSot.
